Urban Multi-Purpose Aboriginal Youth Centres Initiative Projects

The Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centres (UMAYC) Initiative is a five year initiative (1998-2003) designed to provide urban Aboriginal youth with a wide range of culturally based programs, services and activities that are locally controlled and designed in conjunction with Aboriginal youth.

These programs, services and activities are structured in a manner that empowers Aboriginal youth to address the challenges they face and determine their own future with a sense of pride in a safe and culturally relevant environment.

The primary goal of the UMAYC Initiative is to create a network of urban Aboriginal youth centres to support and assist Aboriginal youth in enhancing their economic, social and personal prospects.

There are 21 projects throughout the province of B.C. operating for the fiscal year 2002/2003. These projects can be found in Victoria, Vancouver, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Merritt, Williams Lake, Duncan, Port Alberni, Nanaimo, Kelowna, and Vernon.

The provincial projects in B.C. are administered by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centers (BCAAFC). The Vancouver Projects are administered by the BCAAFC with support from the Department of Canadian Heritage (DCH) in Vancouver.
