UNYA has two programs: the Drop In Centre and the Broadway Youth Resource Center Program:.
Project Summary: This is a continuing UMAYC project. This project is to provide a safe, positive and healthy place for Native youth to hang out, instead of on the streets. The drop-in provides youth dances, U and Me discussion groups, game nights, youth singing, different outings, and also encourages youth to access programs and services.
Broadway Youth Resource Centre Program
Project Summary: This is a continuing UMAYC project. The BYRC is a store front one-stop-approach to social services delivered by a multi-disciplinary team comprised of nine local non-profits and two government bodies. The BYRC provides a safe, positive and healthy place for youth to gather. Services provided are youth group meetings, resource room activities, planning workshops and activities. Youth are encouraged to give input into BYRC programming and to access programs and services.
Anticipated Results for both programs:
1) Youth will learn positive social skills by interacting with other youth and the programs Youth Worker in a positive manner and environment
2) Some youth will earn an honorarium while gaining skills in helping the coordinators fulfill some of the projects goals
3) Youth will participate in and learn skills from community cultural activities
4) Youth will participate in fundraising activities that will teach them skills needed to improve their own economic circumstances currently or in the future
5) Youth will link up with existing programs and services in the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre and beyond, including the elders group, Westcoast and plains family nights, young parents support group, etc.
6) A diverse group of youth will access the Broadway Youth Resource Centre, including males, females, two-spirited, physically challenged, and street involved youth
7) Youth will learn organizational and group process skill by participating on the Youth Council
8) Youth will obtain information about and access community programs and services
9) The Aboriginal Youth Worker will fill a gap in the continuum of services that is needed for our youth to have the best opportunities to lead safe, healthy, and positive lives
10) That the Native community will be strengthened due to the inclusion of youth into community activities which can lead them toward leading safer, healthier, and more productive lives
11) There will be an increased number of Aboriginal youth accessing the Broadway Youth Resource Centre
