Project Name:              Redwire Magazine

Project Summary:      This is a new UMAYC project. Redwire is a youth run magazine that raises awareness to issues relevant to all First Nations youth, such as health and healing resources, promoting awareness of First Nations issues, human rights issues, cultural survival, local events, education and employment information. Rewire also encourages and promotes young First Nations writers, musicians, entrepreneurs, and role models. Redwires goal is to develop a strategy for long-term sustainability.

Anticipated Results:  Our voices are powerful and our voices need to be heard holding it in only deepens our pain, Redwire seeks to express as a method of healing and a method of building towards the future of our great Nations. We hope that our words and our stories will bring us together reinforcing Native youth pride and cooperation nationally.

Redwire is a key resource point for Native youth and we are working towards building our magazine and web site to address Native youth needs and respond to viewers. We expect to increase the amount of hits for our web site by providing information, resources and a network of Native youth stories online.

Currently Redwire is involved in looking at mapping and evaluating services for Native youth in Vancouver through a partnership with the Students Commission and the mapping project. We believe this will add value to Redwire¹s ability to serve Native youth and their communities. By working towards introducing Native youth perspective and situations into mainstream media Redwire is opening doors in terms of building our own communication but also in advocating for better representation in mainstream media.

Promoting the talents of our contributors and youth in our community is Redwire¹s commitment. Through events like our Native youth exhibition for Aboriginal Awareness Day 2002 we hope to showcase Native youth writers, artists and media makers through print, online and special events media.

Redwire will also spend this year organizing our administrative structures and moving forward with incorporating as an Aboriginal organization a big step from our 5 year partnership with the Environmental Youth Alliance but a positive step in being truly Native youth driven from top to bottom.

Our anticipated results will be to have been fully incorporated and have developed a Redwire policy manual and mandate. Our anticipated results are in line with our goals, we hope that by producing media by for and about Native youth we will promotes Native youth voices and concerns, foster interest and skills in the fields of media, art and journalism
